How to Block Instagram Reels Without Deleting Instagram

Instagram has no switch to turn off Reels. Here is how to cut Reels out of your day while keeping DMs and Stories, on iPhone and Android.

Why there is no 'turn off Reels' button

Reels is built into the Instagram home feed, Explore tab and its own tab. Instagram lets you set a daily time reminder and mute notifications, but not remove Reels. Anything that claims to delete Reels completely usually relies on modified apps, which break the platform's rules and can risk your account.

Use Instagram's own tools first

These reduce the pull without blocking anything:

  • Settings → Time management (wording varies by version): set a daily limit reminder.
  • Turn on Quiet mode at night to pause notifications.
  • Tap 'Not interested' on Reels you never want to see; the feed adapts over time.
  • Switch the home feed to 'Following' so you see people you know instead of recommendations.

Keep DMs, lose the feed

If you mostly need Instagram for messages, open DMs in a browser on your computer and shield the Instagram app on your phone during focus hours. You stay reachable without the infinite scroll in your pocket.

Shield Instagram on a schedule

On iPhone use Screen Time App Limits; on Android use Digital Wellbeing app timers. Both can be dismissed quickly, so add friction with an app like focuss:

  • Add Instagram to a Deep Work or Sleep profile so it is shielded during those sessions.
  • Or give Instagram a daily allowance, for example 30 minutes, followed by a cooldown.
  • Ending early requires a 15-minute wait, a partner's approval, or a long typing challenge.

Reclaim your focus with focuss

Shield the apps that pull you in. Calls, messages and maps stay open.
