How to Stop Doomscrolling in Bed: A 5-Step System That Actually Works

A simple five-step night routine combining phone placement, grayscale, sleep profiles and app locks to stop late-night doomscrolling.

1. Pick a hard cutoff time

Choose one time, such as 10:30 PM, when entertainment apps close. A fixed time removes the nightly negotiation.

2. Charge your phone out of reach

Put the charger across the room or outside the bedroom. If the phone is your alarm, the distance also helps you get up in the morning.

3. Turn on grayscale at night

Color makes feeds more engaging. Grayscale (iPhone: Accessibility → Display → Color Filters; Android: Bedtime mode) makes the screen noticeably less appealing.

4. Lock the feeds with a sleep profile

Use a sleep profile that shields social and video apps until morning, while calls and messages stay open. In focuss, the Sleep profile does exactly this, and ending it early requires a cooldown.

5. Replace the habit

Keep a paper book or a short audio playlist by the bed. Your hands want something to do; give them something that ends.

Shield the apps that pull you in. Calls, messages and maps stay open.
